This Baulkham Hills project involved changing an older stamped-concrete surface into a cleaner and more practical outdoor epoxy flake floor. The existing decorative lines were unusually deep, and the customer did not want the old pattern dominating the completed system.
Applying a coating directly over the stamped surface would not have produced the consistent result required. The raised and recessed pattern first had to be mechanically reduced, detailed around the perimeter and finished with a coating-ready profile. The verified project area was 67 m².

The Main Preparation Challenge
Stamped concrete varies from site to site. Some patterns are relatively shallow, while others are pressed deeply into the slab and need repeated grinding passes. On this project, the depth of the decorative grooves made the preparation substantially more involved than a standard coating grind.
We progressively reduced the pattern instead of trying to remove it in one aggressive pass. The achievable result always depends on the depth of the stamping and the condition of the concrete, so we do not claim that every stamped slab can be made perfectly flat.
Site Access and Machinery Selection
Access into the work area made bringing in one of our largest commercial grinders difficult. Rather than forcing oversized equipment through the site, we selected a medium-sized commercial grinder that suited the available route while still providing the weight, control and diamond contact needed for the removal work.
Professional concrete grinding involves choosing equipment around access, edges, layout and logistics as well as floor area. The largest machine is not automatically the right machine.
Site Setup and Protection
Before grinding began, we reviewed the adjoining surfaces, walls, boundaries and restricted sections. The work area was organised around the grinder path, leads and extraction hoses so the preparation could proceed methodically. Suitable industrial dust extraction was used for dust-controlled mechanical preparation; the work is not described as completely dust-free.
Redi-Lock Diamond Grinding
The grinder was fitted with Redi-Lock diamond tooling selected for the concrete and the amount of material that needed to be reduced. Redi-Lock is a replaceable professional tooling system that allows the diamond configuration to be matched to the substrate and removal task.
We worked across the floor using controlled, overlapping passes. Each path overlapped the previous one so narrow raised strips were not left between machine runs. Consistent overlap also helped reduce visible tracking marks and created a more even surface before coating.
The deeper sections could not be removed in one fast pass. We progressively reduced the stamped lines, inspected the surface and repeated local areas where more removal was required.
Hand Grinding and Edge Preparation
The main grinder could not reach every corner, perimeter or restricted section. A considerable amount of hand grinding was completed so the stamped pattern did not remain around the outside after the central area had been prepared.
We brought the hand-ground areas into line with the machine-ground floor. Poor perimeter preparation can leave a visible border, coating build-up or a noticeably different profile, which is why detailed edge work is often one of the most labour-intensive stages of stamped concrete removal.
Final 30-Grit Concrete Preparation
Once the deeper lines had been reduced to the required level, we completed the final machine preparation with 30-grit diamond tooling. This pass removed remaining grinding inconsistencies, blended machine- and hand-ground areas, and created a more uniform mechanical profile for coating adhesion.
The prepared concrete was not polished or left as the final visible floor. The 30-grit profile sat underneath the epoxy flake flooring system and should not be confused with the slip resistance of the completed coating.
Cleaning and Pre-Coating Inspection
Grinding dust and loose material were removed before coating. We inspected the stamped pattern reduction, edges, corners and overall surface profile to confirm the concrete was ready for the specified system. No moisture result or unverified crack repair is claimed.
Epoxy Flake Flooring Installation
Once the preparation and cleaning were complete, we installed the verified flooring sequence already recorded for the project. The system included two epoxy coats, decorative flake broadcast and a protective polyaspartic topcoat suitable for the outdoor application.
After the flakes were applied, loose and raised material was removed as required before the final topcoat. This produced consistent decorative coverage and protected the flake layer over the mechanically prepared concrete.
Outdoor Slip Resistance
Outdoor flooring needs controlled texture because water, dirt, leaves, cleaning products and other contamination can affect traction. The topcoat was completed with a textured, slip-resistant finish selected for the outdoor setting.
The 30-grit concrete stage created the mechanical profile underneath the coating; it did not create or prove a P5 rating. No project-specific P5 test report was supplied, so no formal classification is claimed. Slip resistance also depends on contamination, cleaning, footwear, traffic and maintenance, and no floor should be described as completely slip-proof.
The Completed Result
The stamped pattern was mechanically reduced so it would not dominate or interfere with the completed floor. The finished area provided more consistent decorative flake coverage, clean perimeter transitions and a textured outdoor surface that is easier to clean than the previous deeply patterned concrete.
This project demonstrates more than coating installation. It shows our ability to assess difficult profiles, choose machinery around restricted access, complete controlled Redi-Lock diamond grinding, maintain clean overlapping passes and prepare detailed edges before installing the specified floor system.
Suitable Applications and Maintenance
Similar preparation and epoxy flake flooring may be considered for covered entertaining areas, patios, walkways, verandas, entries, display areas and suitable external commercial spaces. Every area must be assessed for concrete condition, exposure, drainage, access and the required slip-resistance specification.
Regular removal of grit and leaves, prompt spill cleaning and the use of a suitable cleaner help preserve the floor. High-traffic areas should be inspected for wear, and local damage should be repaired before moisture or contamination can reach the concrete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can epoxy flake flooring be installed over stamped concrete?
It can be considered where the concrete is suitable, but the stamped profile normally requires mechanical reduction and detailed preparation before coating.
Why was a medium-sized grinder used?
Access for our largest machines was restricted. The selected grinder suited the route while retaining the weight and control needed for professional diamond preparation.
Does 30-grit grinding provide a P5 rating?
No. The grinding profile is underneath the coating. Any formal slip classification relates to the tested finished system, not the concrete grit alone.
Is the finished floor non-slip?
No floor is completely slip-proof. We describe the completed surface as textured and slip-resistant, with actual traction affected by contamination, footwear, cleaning and maintenance.
