Custom Epoxy Flake Flooring for Turtle Burgers

We completed a custom commercial epoxy flake flooring system for Turtle Burgers in Chipping Norton, NSW 2170.

We installed a custom commercial epoxy flake floor using two coats of 100% solids epoxy, an owner-selected decorative flake blend and two clear polyaspartic protective topcoats.

The owner wanted more than a plain commercial floor. The decorative flake blend was personally selected to work with the appearance and character of the burger shop, giving the finished customer area a distinctive look rather than a standard off-the-shelf colour combination.

The floor also needed to be practical for everyday business use. It had to provide a continuous coated finish that was easier to clean than untreated concrete while protecting the decorative flakes beneath normal customer foot traffic, routine cleaning and everyday contamination.

We installed the system in several controlled stages: mechanical concrete preparation, two coats of 100% solids epoxy, the custom decorative flake application and two clear polyaspartic protective topcoats.

Project Objective

The objective was to create a custom epoxy floor that contributed to the presentation of the Turtle Burgers premises while remaining practical for a busy customer-facing commercial environment.

The owner selected the decorative flake combination so the floor would suit the burger shop rather than looking like a generic industrial coating.

Although the flakes determine much of the finished appearance, the long-term performance of an epoxy flake floor depends heavily on the work completed underneath them. For this reason, we treated the concrete preparation, epoxy coats and clear protective layers as equally important parts of the finished system.

How We Installed the Turtle Burgers Floor

1. Initial Floor Inspection

We first inspected the existing concrete and planned the preparation and coating stages around the condition of the substrate. The purpose of this stage was to identify the areas requiring attention and make sure the concrete could be properly prepared before any epoxy was applied.

2. Mechanical Concrete Preparation

We mechanically ground the concrete floor to remove surface contamination and open the concrete. This created a suitable surface profile for the epoxy system to bond to. Applying epoxy over an unprepared or poorly prepared floor can leave contaminants, smooth areas or weak surface material between the concrete and the coating.

The concrete grinding was therefore part of the complete epoxy installation rather than a separate finished flooring service.

3. Edge Preparation and Dust Removal

The main floor and accessible perimeter areas were prepared so the coating system could continue neatly towards the edges.

After grinding, the floor was thoroughly vacuumed and cleaned. Concrete dust and loose material had to be removed before coating because material left on the substrate can interfere with adhesion and the appearance of the finished floor.

4. Final Inspection Before Coating

Once the mechanical preparation and cleaning were complete, we inspected the concrete again before applying the first epoxy coat. This allowed us to confirm that the surface was clean, open and ready to receive the coating system.

5. First 100% Solids Epoxy Primer Coat

We applied the first coat of 100% solids epoxy over the mechanically prepared concrete. This coat formed the initial bond between the prepared substrate and the flooring system. It also began sealing the prepared surface and provided the foundation for the following epoxy layer.

6. Second 100% Solids Epoxy Coat

A second coat of 100% solids epoxy was then applied. Using a second epoxy coat helped create a more consistent base beneath the decorative finish and provided the wet coating required for the custom flake application.

The second coat was applied carefully so the floor had consistent coverage before the decorative flakes were distributed.

7. Owner-Selected Custom Flake Application

The custom flake blend selected by the owner was distributed into the wet epoxy. The goal was to create balanced decorative coverage across the floor while maintaining the individual appearance selected for the Turtle Burgers premises.

Although a flake blend can be selected in advance, the exact positioning of individual flakes naturally develops during installation. This means every completed decorative flake floor has slight variations and its own individual character.

8. Curing and Removal of Loose Flakes

After the epoxy and decorative flakes had cured, loose or raised flake material was removed and the surface was thoroughly vacuumed. This stage prepared the decorative layer for the clear protective coats and helped produce a more consistent final texture.

9. First Clear Polyaspartic Topcoat

We applied the first clear polyaspartic topcoat over the decorative flake layer. This coat began encapsulating and protecting the flakes while improving the floor’s cleanability and resistance to normal commercial use.

10. Second Clear Polyaspartic Topcoat

A second clear polyaspartic topcoat was applied to provide an additional protective wear layer. Two clear coats were selected for this customer rather than relying on a single topcoat.

The additional coat improved the encapsulation of the decorative flakes and provided further protection against normal customer foot traffic, routine cleaning, light abrasion and everyday spills or contamination.

11. Final Inspection

After the final coating stage, we inspected the completed floor, perimeter areas, overall coverage and appearance.

The result was a custom commercial epoxy flake floor that matched the owner’s selected style and gave the Turtle Burgers premises a distinctive, easier-to-clean finished surface for customers and everyday operation.

Why Two Polyaspartic Topcoats Were Used

The decorative flakes create the appearance of the floor, but the clear topcoats provide the main exposed protective surface. For this project, we applied two clear polyaspartic topcoats to build greater protection over the custom decorative layer.

The topcoats help protect the flakes from:

• Normal customer foot traffic
• Routine floor cleaning
• Light everyday abrasion
• Minor spills and contamination
• General commercial use

The clear coats also make the finished surface easier to sweep, vacuum and clean than unfinished concrete.

The floor still requires sensible care. Sharp objects, dragged equipment, aggressive cleaning pads or unsuitable chemicals can damage a coated floor.

One of the main advantages of decorative epoxy flooring is the ability to choose a blend that works with the surrounding commercial interior.

Because individual flakes are distributed during installation, every completed floor develops slightly differently. The selected blend can be repeated, but the exact placement and pattern of every flake will never be identical.
