Start with the slab and the next floor finish

The preparation method should suit both the existing concrete and the flooring system that follows. Glue removal, coating removal, high-spot reduction and profiling for a new coating are different tasks. Existing contamination, soft toppings, patch repairs and variable concrete hardness can also change the tooling and number of passes required.

Separate removal, grinding and levelling

Surface preparation does not automatically mean the slab will be level. Grinding can reduce accessible high spots, remove surface materials and produce a profile, but the achievable result depends on slab thickness, reinforcement, edges, thresholds and the required tolerances.

Measure the main area, edges and restricted zones

Provide the approximate total area and mark separate work zones on a plan where possible. Identify columns, plinths, fixed equipment, narrow rooms, doorways, perimeter details and sections that the main grinder cannot reach. These areas usually require smaller grinding equipment and additional labour.

Clarify whether the quoted area includes edges, joints, thresholds, ramps and local repairs. A usable scope distinguishes large open production areas from detailed or restricted work instead of treating every square metre as identical.

Plan equipment access, power and dust controls

Large grinders and dust extractors require a practical route from the unloading point to the work area. Check door widths, ramps, lifts, suspended slabs, loading restrictions and changes in floor level. Confirm the available electrical supply, distribution-board location and lead routes. Propane-powered equipment still requires a site-specific assessment, and compatible dust extraction may require electrical power.

Dry concrete grinding should be planned with suitable industrial dust extraction, sealed collection methods and site controls. Occupied areas, air movement, alarms, isolation zones and other trades can affect the setup. Grinding can be dust-controlled, but it should not be described as completely dust-free.

Coordinate programme and handover

Confirm when the area will be clear, whether other trades will be working nearby and who is responsible for removing loose materials or movable equipment. Allow time for setup, detailed edge work, consumable changes, cleaning and inspection—not only the main production passes.

A useful handover description may state that a specified coating or adhesive is to be mechanically removed and the concrete left clean and prepared for inspection by the following flooring contractor. Avoid promising a perfectly flat, blemish-free or coating-ready slab unless measurable acceptance criteria and the full remedial scope have been agreed.
